‘Take Nothing for Granted”: US Mid Term Elections

US Mid Term Elections, 2026

3rd November 2026: Horsham

Today, America is going to the polls. The 2026 mid term elections for the Senate and Congress in the United States are finally here.

Take Nothing for Granted: Mid Terms 2026

There’s a kind of tradition that the mid terms punish the party of the incumbent president. This time, there’s a feeling that the punishment might be rather more severe than usual. However, polls have been wrong before. Anything could happen.

Last night, the message to Republicans was simple. ‘Take nothing for granted’. Even if you live in a strongly Republican area, ‘get out and vote.’ For the Democrats, in spite of the optimistic expectation of a ‘blue wave’,  the message is exactly the same. ‘Take nothing for granted.’

Since becoming the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump has largely ignored precedent and convention, successfully manipulating a Republican led Congress and Senate. There’s no reason to expect that his attitude towards these institutions will change significantly, whoever comes out on top in the mid terms.

One thing is clear. Tomorrow morning, Donald J Trump will still be the 47th President of the United States. His presidency still has two years to run. A Republican victory today will hugely embolden him, whilst a Democratic win will infuriate him. Either way, his erratic and disruptive policies will continue to cause havoc at home and far beyond the borders of the US.

So, on this auspicious day, my best wishes to my American friends – Republican, Democrat, or independent, who will, I hope, exercise their right to vote in the mid terms.  We truly live in dangerous times. Whatever our political allegiance or our nationality, we all face a challenging future. This is a time to stand together. The message to all of us is simple.  ‘Take nothing for granted.’
